How To Care For Your Skin In Winter

While we do love winter for cosy fireplaces and hot chocolates, we don't love how the temperature affects our skin.

It seems as if overnight our skin goes from being nourished, hydrated and plump to dull, dry and cracked.

In winter, there is naturally less moisture in the air due to the environment and abrasive conditions, like the wind. Indoor factors like central heating can also decrease the moisture level of the air.

This makes it harder for the skin to maintain its natural protective oils, which act as a barrier against environmental aggressors. As a result, moisture gets pulled from the skin, leading it to become dry and cracked.

And for some, the problem is worse than just a general tight, dry feeling.

They get skin so dry it results in flaking, cracking, or even worst, eczema.

The skin's protective barrier flaws during the colder months of the year, making it less able to repair itself.

Our natural skin care tips will keep your skin supple this winter!

Hydrate:

Hydration starts from the inside out. If you want to make sure your skin is hydrated, your body must be hydrated, too. Good hydration on the inside and out provides your skin cells what they need to stay healthy. Be sure to drink enough water. It doesn’t have to be cold water.

Exfoliate:

Exfoliate your skin regularly (but not more than twice a week) to get rid of the dead skin cells, which can be dry and coarse. It also allows moisturiser to penetrate the skin better.

Exfoliation promotes cell renewal by allowing new, moist skin cells to surface, which will help to keep your skin to stay hydrated for longer.

Avoid hot showers:

It’s difficult to resist the temptation to take a long hot shower during this time of year, however, the heat from the shower can strip the skin of its natural moisture and irritate dry skin. Turn down the heat and take a shorter shower.

Top up on super foods:

Keep your immune system healthy and your skin will be grateful. Aim to include as many super foods in your diet each day to give your body the immune boost it needs to get you through the chilly months.

Broccoli, carrots, oats, red capsicum, garlic, lemons and green tea contain all the vitamins and antioxidants your body and skin need to stay healthy in winter.
