Balancing combination skin or two different skin types can seem like a mystery
Combination skin can be part dry, part oily or even part normal in some areas. Like the T-Zone (chin, forehead and nose). The most common combination is dry with a normal T-Zone, or normal with an oily T-Zone.
And usually the T-Zone suffers from enlarged pores, shininess and blackheads.
Genetics can play a large role in your skin type. Whether you have dry, oily, sensitive, or combination skin, it’s likely that you inherited it from your parents and grandparents. There are more sebaceous glands in the T-Zone, which are responsible for creating sebum, the waxy substance that keeps your skin soft and supple.
Our sebaceous glands in this area are responsible for how much oil your skin produces. However, there are also environmental factors that play a role in your skin type.
Certain products and lifestyle habits can contribute to combination skin; using harsh cleansers can strip your skin of its natural oils which in turn causes your sebaceous glands to become overly active. It can also worsen breakouts in the T-Zone while drying out other parts of the face.
So how do you care for combination skin?
Combination skin needs to be balanced and requires more care than normal skin does. To care for combination skin, the oil-water balance can be achieved by treating both the oily and dryer areas of the face.
A proper skincare routine helps to keep skin clear and blemishes minimal. The type of cleanser you’re using is important; we don’t want it to contain any harsh chemicals that will strip your skin.
Make sure it does not contain any bleaching ingredients, no alcohol. Use a pure, natural cleanser with soothing, hydrating properties to help reduce inflammation. Wash dirt, excess oils, and impurities away with a gentle facial cleanser twice a day—once in the morning and once at night time.
Exfoliate once or twice a week to slough off dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. Build-up of dead skin cells can make your complexion look dull. But at the same time, you don’t want to over-exfoliate. Grab a facial exfoliant that’s suitable for all skin types, since you are dealing with two types of skin after all.

Choose a hydrating toner that has anti-inflammatory properties to sooth your skin. It’s important to keep your skin balanced and pores minimised. Apply a moisturiser to relieve the dryness and give those areas extra nourishing enriched hydration, while leaving the oily areas with just a layer of lightweight moisture.
Wear sunscreen every time you go outdoors, whether it’s the middle of summer or the dead of winter always apply sunscreen.
Make sure you use sunscreen of 30 SPF or higher, and apply around 30 minutes before you leave the house. This goes for all skin types, not just combination skin.
